Monica’s Story
Growing up in a bustling family as the third oldest among fourteen siblings - eleven girls and three boys - my innate nurturing nature emerged from the very beginning. My realization of this unique gift came into sharp focus when my grandfather fell ill when I was just fifteen. During that challenging time, my siblings and I collectively cared for him, and I discovered an undeniable affinity towards him as I began to truly comprehend the gravity of his terminal condition.
As I've matured, that deep love and compassion I developed for my grandfather has extended to the elderly and those facing terminal illnesses who I encounter today. I am acutely aware that as individuals age and grapple with various health issues, there remain opportunities for them to experience moments of wonder and joy. We all crave and deserve joy in our lives, even when we enter a phase where many approach our care by focusing solely on the essentials. Unfortunately, resources can often be scarce, making it challenging for families to provide more than just the basics.
From an early age, I immersed myself in caring for elderly relatives. My objective was to enhance their quality of life beyond the confines of a bed and a TV. During this period, I pursued studies in health and nutrition to become a more qualified caregiver. My dedication led me to volunteer at Houston Hospice, where I realized my calling was to devote my time to building meaningful relationships with individuals in the final stages of life. I aimed to provide them with the essential elements that would make them feel happy, comfortable, and truly at home. I paid meticulous attention to even the smallest details, such as adjusting their bed pillows, ensuring they were supremely comfortable.
JoyCare represents the culmination of my life's dream and my genuine calling. I now spend my days offering companionship, fostering connections, and delivering genuine joy to those who need it most. I make multiple weekly visits to clients' homes, engaging in activities such as planning dinner parties, hosting visits from close friends and family, or simply taking them out for their favorite meal, activity, or adventure. Witnessing the sheer delight on my clients' faces when I am with them brings me immense joy. Simultaneously, I see their families finding confidence and solace in the knowledge that their loved ones are receiving exceptional care while they take a much-needed break to recharge.
Many of my clients have expressed that I feel like an extension of their own family, and after years of working with individuals in their final stages of life, I wholeheartedly reciprocate that sentiment.
In addition to being a certified caregiver, I also hold certification as a Personal Trainer. My achievements include being honored as a Social Book Houston Treasure in 2020, and my dedication spans 25 years with Mission of Yahweh. Moreover, for the past 15 years, I've been privileged to celebrate Christmas at a local homeless shelter, bringing joy to members of our community during a time of celebration when they need it most. In 2009, I founded "Christmas on a Mission" at Mission of Yahweh, where we transform the shelter into a winter wonderland with real snow, Santa Claus, and all the enchantment of the season. Our mission is to provide the homeless with presents they truly desire, going beyond basic necessities. Each year, we are joined by a dedicated team of 100 volunteers who serve 120 homeless women and children, making this event a heartwarming and cherished tradition.
The most gratifying aspect of my profession? It's the moment I see my patients' faces light up when they experience genuine joy. When they share stories about their wedding day, a cherished outing, or their beloved children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and their entire face radiates happiness, I know they are truly in a joyful state.
My aspiration is for everyone facing the challenges of caring for a loved one to experience the magic of JoyCare. Providing JoyCare to as many people as possible is an honor and privilege I hold dear.
